What is the rights of the father concerning his daughter after divorce?

As Salaamu Alaikum,

Q: Any help with the following would be greatly appreciated: For a father what are his rights with regard to having his girl child live with him at some point after divorce. If any what life change communications should be provided like remarriage, relocation, child movement. Etc.

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,

A: The right of the father with respect to his girl child is that he will have custody of her when

she reaches the age of puberty. He will be free to remarry and relocate. Wherever he goes, the

child will go with him since he has full custody of his daughter. However, since the mother may

have visitation rights and the daughter may need to see her mother, arrangements for this should

be made, taking into consideration the area where the father and daughter may be living.
