Bleeding after miscarriage
Assalaamu Alaikum,
If a woman when a intrauterine demises but in order to process with the miscarriage the hospital suggest she goes through a dnc / surgical evacuation so will her waiting period be the same as nifaas 40 days 40 nights, because the bleeding is lighter than nifaas and the may stop within a week or so. Please tell what is her waiting before she start back to pray.
Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,
الجواب و بالله التوفيق
If the miscarriage was that of a foetus in which body parts/organs like an arm, leg or hand was formed, then the bleeding after this is considered to be Nifaas and it may last any time between 1-40 days. As such, if this was the state of the foetus and the bleeding lasted for one week, then (in the case after surgical evacuation), her Nifaas will be considered as this period of one week and will end at this time.
If however, when the miscarriage occurred, no body parts/organs of the human was formed, but it was just a clot/flesh or bleeding, then the bleeding after the miscarriage (in this case after surgical evacuation) will not be considered as Nifaas.
In this situation, if the bleeding occurs for 3 days (minimum) then it will be considered as menses (provided that she was in a state of purity before the miscarriage). If this is not the situation, then is will be Istihadhaa. This means that if it is considered to be Istihadhaa, then the woman will have to perform her Salaah in this state even though she may experience the flow of blood. However, if it is considered to be menses or Nifaas as per the explaination above, then she will wait until the bleeding stops and then begin to perform Salaah.
