I’TIKAF IN THE LAST 10 DAYS OF RAMADHAN

Question:

As Salaamu Alaikum,

With respect to doing I’tikaf of the last 10 days of Ramadhan, is it essential that it be done in every Muslim locality where there is a Masjid? What if in a locality, there are a few Masaajid, would it be essential to do it in every Masjid or only in one Masjid?

 

Answer:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

The performance of I’tikaf in the last 10 days of Ramadhan is considered as Sunnah Al-Kifayah. As such, if it is observed by a few persons of a locality, or even one person, then this would be sufficient. However, if no one from the locality observes it, then the entire locality would be sinful. As for if there are a few Masaajid in one locality, then the best thing would be to observe it in every Masjid. However, if unable to do so, then I’tikaf of one Masjid in that locality would suffice.
