Status of marriage after denouncing religion
Q. I recently found out that when you denounce the faith your marriage is automatically broken but while I had no knowledge about it I did apostate the religion but I am a muslim now and both me and my husband did not know that we needed to get remarried and we are still living as husband and wife. So what I want to know is if we are unlawfull for each other and if we can still get remarried.
A. Yes, you are presently unlawful for each other until you both remarry. You should therefore remarry each other as soon as possible. This re-marriage does not have to be a large ceremony. You simply need to have two Muslim male witnesses (who are not minors), who would witness your statements of proposal (consent) and acceptance. In this re-marriage, the husband will have to give you a Mahr (dowry). Once these are done, then your marriage will be valid, and you can continue to live together as husband and wife.
And Allah knows best.
