REQUESTING A NON-MUSLIM TO PRAY FOR US

As Salaamu Alaikum,

QUESTION:

Is it kufr to ask non-Muslim to pray for us? Many Indian Muslims think that Allah does listen to hijda/kinnar (homosexual community who dress up as a women) and their curse is also effective, I want to ask that all these are kufr or not? I was watching a video of an ahle hadees aalim who said that as a formality it is okay because Allah can listen to non-Muslim in this world but not in the hereafter, Allah never said that I won’t give you anything in this world infact world is Jannah for non-Muslims, if all these are kufr so that Aalim will be kafir? And also many Indian Muslims will also be the kuffar?

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

AMSWER:

It is not Kufr to ask a non-Muslim to pray for you, but it is totally wrong to do so. People who commit sins are disobedient to Allah and through their sins, they incur the wrath of Allah upon themselves. The homosexual communities are from the followers of the people of Lut (A.S) who were destroyed by Allah with a severe punishment. They are involved in a sin which is heinous and hated by Allah. Further to this, their dressing like women brings about the curse of the Prophet (S.A). Regarding this, Abdullah bin Abbas (R.A) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (S.A.S) cursed those women who likened themselves to men and (he cursed) those men who likened themselves to women. (Saheeh Al Bukhari)

In another tradition, Abu Hurairah (R.A) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah cursed the man who wears the clothing of a woman, and he cursed the woman who wears the clothing of a man’. (Abu Dawood)

Therefore, those who indulge in such heinous sins are bringing upon themselves the wrath and anger of Allah, not His mercy. Hence, their supplication for others are not accepted by Allah, and  their curse on others will also not take effect since they are themselves cursed by Allah and His Messenger (S.A.S) on account of their deep engrossment in  major sins.

In this world, Allah Has already decreed the sustenance (Rizq) of everyone, and based on what He has fixed, it will come to the person, whether he is a Muslim or not. In a similar manner, whatever conditions have been decreed for a person, it will come to the person, regardless of his faith. Therefore, when you see unbelievers in good positions, enjoying the best of everything, it does not mean that they are making dua to Allah (for these things) and Allah is accepting their duas. Instead, what they receive is based on the decree which Allah Has already made for them, even before they were born. It can also be an exchange in this world for goodness which they do for others, so that no reward is stored for them in the hereafter.

As for Allah’s listening to the prayer of a non-Muslim, this occurs when the non-Muslim is oppressed by others. The reason for this is that Allah dislikes oppression (and injustice), and Has made it totally prohibited among all His creations. It is for this reason, Allah will respond to the call of anyone when he suffers oppression from others, because justice and the fulfillment of human rights are to be enjoyed by every human being regardless of the religion he may follow.

Allah can also listen to the prayer of a non-Muslim if he calls upon Him for guidance. If the person is sincere and his heart is open to the truth, then Allah can guide him to Islam, and he will become a Muslim who will begin to worship Allah Alone.

Similarly, if a non-Muslim is in difficulties, hardships, sufferings etc. and he calls only on Allah, then Allah can help him and remove hardships from him. Allah does this for people so that they can recognize Him as the Only God and Creator, and will turn to Him in worship when He removes their calamities.

However, if people pray to their deities, gods, idols, saints, images etc. and think that Allah will answer their prayers, then this would not happen, since they are calling on others beside Allah. Similarly, if the non-Muslim continues to pray to his god, or to a picture/image, or to a prophet (like Jesus), and the Muslim requests him to pray  for him, then it is clearly understood that the non-Muslim will pray to his god  and object of worship (besides Allah) to help the Muslim. In this case, the Muslim will receive no help from Allah, and the prayer of the non-Muslim will not be answered by Allah. In fact, by doing this, the Muslim has committed a very grave wrong which can be termed as ‘Shirk’ since he has requested the non-Muslim to seek help from his god for him. This shows that the Muslim believes that the god of the non-Muslim is also a god who can help people, and this nothing but clear Shirk and Kufr with Allah. Therefore, Muslims must never request non-Muslims to pray for them.

And Allah Knows best
