QUESTION:

As Salaamu Alaikum,

I have a question.

What is the ruling about women having a male gynecologist, particularly related to her wanting to protect her awra, but her family is insisting that she sees this doctor, because he comes recommend by other doctors, despite her clearly saying she is not comfortable with that?

ANSWER:

Al Jawaab Wa Billahi-At Tawfeeq,

Wa Aalaikum As Salaam.

With regards to a woman having a male gynaecologist, the scholars have stated that it is generally impermissible. This is because it entails showing the Awrah (body parts which must be covered from others) to a non-mahram male. As such, a woman must visit a female gynaecologist.

However, if a female expert is not available, or there isn’t any female who may treat her, then in this situation, it would be permitted to visit a male gynaecologist, provided it is a severe case for which there is a genuine need.
