QUESTION:
As Salaamu Alaikum,
I would like to ask regarding reciting the Quls.
Do we recite the 4 Quls and blow in our hands and wipe over our body before we sleep or we only recite three excluding surah kafiroon.
Jazakallah khairan
ANSWER:
Wa Alaikum As Salaam,
It is evident from the practice of the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam) that he recited Surahs Ikhlaas, Al Falaq and An Nas only and blew into his hands and then passed them over his body. In this regard, Aisha (RA) narrated that when the Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam) went to bed every night, he would join his both palms (cup his hands together), blow into them, and recite in his hands Qul Huwallahu Ahad, Qul A’udhu bi Rabbil Falaq and Qul A’udhu bi Rabbin Nas, and then he wiped his hands over as much of his body as he could. He started with his head and face, and the front part of his body. He did this three times, (Sahih Al Bukhari Hadith No. 5017).
From the above, it is evident that with respect to reciting and blowing into the hands, then only the last three Quls have been mentioned. However, one is also encouraged to recite Sura Al Kaafiroon before sleeping.
Regarding this, Nawfal Al Ashja’ narrated that the Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam) said, ‘Recite Sura Al Kaafiroon, then go to sleep at the end of it, for it is a disassociation of Shirk’ (Abu Dawood Hadith Number 5055).
The above Hadith shows that one is also encouraged to recite Sura Al Kaafiroon before sleeping, however, it is not to be recited as part of the three Surahs which one recites to blow into his hands and pass over the body.
And Allah knows best
