QUESTION:

As Salaamu Alaikum,

If a person has an urinary incontinence or infection does he need to be continuous in washing the private part and making wudu can there be a gap between these two? Like a gap of 5min or more?

ANSWER:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

If a person has a urinary incontinence or infection which causes uncontrolled leakage of urine, then this person will fall into the category of ‘an excused person’. This is so because the regular uncontrolled leakage of urine causes the wudhu to be broken and also causes impurity to fall on the clothing.

Seeing that this becomes a major problem in terms of seeking purification for Salah, the Shariah has excused such person since he/she has no control over this state. As such, one who encounters this problem, when the time of Salah enters, he/she will be required to use the bathroom and clean oneself and one’s clothing from impurities. After this, the person should use something to block the ‘leaking urine’ from dripping on the body and clothing.

After this, the person should perform a complete wudhu during the Salah timing and perform Salah with that wudhu. Even though one may sense/feel the leakage of urine, one should still continue to perform Salah since his/her present state is overlooked in the Shariah to avoid difficulties. During the Salah time, one can perform other Sunnah and Nawafil Salah as long as the time for that particular Salah remains. However, when the timing of that Salah ends, the wudhu will be immediately broken, and one will have to renew ones’ wudhu for another Salah.

The above is what a person is required to do, and there is no requirement to constantly wash the private part and make wudhu.

And Allah Knows best
