CULTIVATION AND AGRICULTURE

QUESTION:

As salaamu Alaikum,

Can you please explain the meaning of this Hadiths of Bukhari Chapter: Cultivation and Agriculture. Narrated/Authority of Abu Umama al-Bahili I saw some agricultural equipment and said: “I heard the Prophet (SAW) saying: “There is no house in which these equipment enters except that Allah will cause humiliation to enter it.

ANSWER:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

This hadith does not seek to prohibit having cultivation or agricultural equipment in one’s home, nor does it prohibit farming. This statement uttered by the Messenger of Allah (SAW) was done to warn and stop people from becoming too engrossed and occupied in this occupation, since this may cause one to be unmindful and neglectful of his Islamic duties.

It is often seen that those who are fully occupied in farming and agriculture, are negligent in performing Salaah on time; attending the Masjid regularly and devoting their time in propagating Islam. They show neglect to many of their Islamic duties.  In order to warn people about this, the Prophet (SAW) mentioned the above statement so that they may be moderate in their work of farming and cultivation.

Therefore, if one is engaged in this work but fulfils his duties as a Muslim in accordance to the teachings of Islam, then there will be no reproach upon him, and no humiliation will enter his home if he has cultivation/agricultural equipment’s. However, if occupation in this (cultivation/agriculture) makes one unmindful of his duties in Islam and prevents him from propagating and spreading the message of Islam, then this will become a cause for humiliation to enter one’s house.

And Allah knows best
