FASTING WITH DIABETES
QUESTION:
As Salaamu Alaikum,
Last year during Ramadan I fell ill and ended up in hospital, to shorten the story, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes! I recently did blood work to check my status, before Ramadan to know whether I can fast, after the results a doctor advised me not fast because the same thing as last year could happen again! What should I do?
ANSWER:
Wa Alaikum As Salaam,
It is important that you consult a practicing Muslim doctor who is well informed regarding your health condition, and also understands the importance and ruling of fasting in Islam.
After consulting such a doctor, if he strongly recommends that you must not fast, then you should refrain from fasting since it may cause harm to you.
In this state, if you hope to achieve betterment in your health in the future, and you believe that you will be in a condition to observe the fast, then you must make up for your missed fast  in the future.
However, if your health condition does not become better and you think that you will always be affected when you fast in the future, then you must pay Fidyah for every day of the fast which you miss.
And Allah Knows best
