FIDYA FOR MISSED FAST DURING RAMADHAN

QUESTION:

As Salaamu Alaikum,

I had one question if you can help question is can a terminally ill British citizen who is not able to fast discharge his/her FIDYA abroad by giving out rice based on hanafi madhab? And please explain how much should the rice weight? Also if he/she choses to pay cash instead to poor people as FIDYA do they have to pay based on british pound currency or should they use local currency fidya rate when discharging FIDYA abroad? Jazzak Allah Khair.

ANSWER:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

Yes, the terminally ill British Citizen can discharge his/her Fidya by giving out rice based on the Hanafi Madhab. The amount to be given in Fidyah as mentioned by many scholars of the Hanafi Madhab is 1.6 kg of wheat. Therefore, whatever cost/value this is in cash, then the amount of rice that cash can buy will be the amount of rice you can give. (Kitab Al Masaa’il Vol. 2 page 284 Markaz ilmi Muradabad 2013).

If the person choses to pay the fidya in cash, then it will be the cash value of 1.6 kg of wheat based on british pound currency. That is, seeing that you are a British Citizen, then when paying your Fidya in another country, you must use the value (rate/price) of the Fidya in your country (Britain) to pay. Then you can give the equivalent amount in another country in their currency. This means that you will use the british pound currency to determine how much you must pay in Fidya, and when paying it in another country, you can use the local currency which must be equivalent to the amount of british pounds that you have to pay in Fidya. (Kitab Al Masaa’il Vol. 2 page. 286 Markaz Ilmi Muradabad 2013)
