Q. Is it within the shariah for persons to get involved with jinns and the unseen? I have heard of persons who call on good jinns to solve problems, believed to have been caused by bad jinns or evil acts by others (e.g. black magic). Is doing this a good practice and is anything wrong with this sort of act (dealing with jinns and the unseen and calling upon jinns for answers and for help to cure situations)? In my opinion…jinns are jinns and humans are humans and I don’t think it’s right for humans to deal with the unseen or interact with them? Is this a wrong way of thinking? I’m not sure. Also what is the best advice can you give to help in situations whereby black magic has been performed or believed to have been on families to cause rift and “bad living” amongst themselves? I know of persons who deal with the unseen to solve these situations but is that the correct step to take since they are in fact more knowledgeable than I am with situations like these?

A. It is not permissible in Islam for one to get involved with matters of the unseen, nor is it permissible to call on jinns for help and cure. The jinns and humans are two separate creations of Allah and they are prohibited from using each other for services. Condemning this action, Allah says in the Quran:-

And on the Day when He will gather them (all) together (and say): “O you assembly of jinns! Many did you mislead of men,” and their Auliya’ (friends and helpers, etc.) amongst men will say: “Our Lord! We benefited one from the other, but now we have reached our appointed term which You did appoint for us.” He will say: “The Fire be your dwelling-place, you will dwell therein forever, except as Allah may will. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.” ( sura Al An’am v. 128)

Jinns have been created to live in their own world, and humans have been created to live in their own world. They have been prohibited from seeking benefit from each other and have been disallowed from oppressing each other. For this reason, Islam is totally against the concept of enslaving a jinn or taking control of it ‘to work’ for someone.

In many cases, it has been seen that those who claim to possess jinns are required to offer sacrifices and feed the jinns. These are totally haram and condemned in Islam.

In cases where one has been affected with black magic or witchcraft or any other similar problem, the Quran has given many verses which can be read to solve these problems. There are also a great amount of duas of the Prophet (SA) which can be used for these problems. One way of ensuring that one is protected against these evils is to be punctual in one’s Salaah, and after every Farz Salaah one should recite the Ayatul Kursi. One should also recite a good amount of Quran on a daily basis, along with making the Zikr of the third Kalimah and Darood (sending peace and blessing on the Prophet (SA) ) abundantly. One should also go to sleep with wuzu, and try to be in a state of purity and cleanliness as much as possible. Reciting Sura Mulk at nights and Suras Falaq and An Nas before sleeping is very beneficial.

Insha Allah, when one becomes more practical in the Islamic practices, the forces of evil will eventually come to an end.

There are competent persons who have knowledge of verses of the Quran and duas which help in removing the effects of evil, you can go to them. These people strictly use ‘Aamal’ (verses of the Quran) and are able (on account of their experience) to help those afflicted with jinn problems. There is no harm in going to them. As for those who make claims of having knowledge of unseen and are involved in practices that are contrary to Islam, then you should not visit these people (Kitabul Fatawa (Qazi Khalid Saifullah) vol. 1 pg.299)
