Is having a dog for a pet allowed in Islam?

Is having a dog for a pet allowed in Islam? And if not, why?

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,

الجواب و بالله التوفيق

The Prophet (SAS) has stated that dogs are allowed for hunting and for security purposes (to guard properties, animals, farms etc.) (Sahih Al Bukhari). In the narration of Abdullah Bin Umar (R.A), it states that the Prophet (S.A.S) said, ‘Whoever keeps a dog except for watching over the livestock or hunting, then everyday two Qiraat (of blessing) are decreased from his good deeds.’ (Bukhari, Muslim). The allowance has not been extended for any other purpose. The possible reason that they are not allowed as pets is because they are very unclean.
