Is it permissible to give blood to blood banks?

Question:

As Salaamu Alaikum,

I have two questions.

(1) A brother asked recently whether the deceased is questioned in his grave or in barzakh?
(2) Another brother wanted to know if it was permissible to give blood to blood banks so they can have a store just in case they need it?

Jazakamullahu Khairun in advance for your time and effort.

Wa Salaam.

Answer:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

1) When a person enters into the grave, he actually goes in the state of Barzakh where the questions begin. So, being in the grave is actually being in barzakh.

2) Donating blood to another person is only allowed in the case of a necessity that requires it. Simply storing blood in the blood bank is not sufficient as a need for a Muslim to give blood to the blood bank. Hence, it is not permissible for a Muslim to donate his blood to the bank to be stored up.
