Answer:

Wa Alaikum as Salaam,

Besides the Hanafi Scholars, the other three Madhabs and other scholars have clearly stated that it is Wajib for one to offer Qaza Salaat. That is, one who has missed the farz Salaat (which was essential upon him/her) on account of sleep, forgetfulness, other excuses or without any excuses, it will be Wajib (essential) upon this person to make up for the missed salaah. (Al Lubaab; Mughi Al Muhtaaj; Al Majmoo; Bidayatul Mujtahid).

In this regard, the Prophet (SAS) is reported to have said, ‘whoever sleeps over Salaah or forgets it, let him perform it when he remembers it. There is no compensation for it except this (that is, to offer it as Qaza Salaah). (Bukhari , Muslim).

It is also evident that Abdullah bin Masood (RA) said that the Mushrikeen (polytheists) kept the Prophet (SAS) away from performing four Salaah (Farz) on the day of the digging of the trench (to protect Madina at the time of the battle of the trench). The Prophet (SAS) remained busy digging the trench until a portion of the night passed. After this, he ordered Bilal (RA) to call the Azan and the Iqamah and performed dhuhr Salaah. Then Bilal called the Iqamah again and he performed the Asr Salaah. Bilal then called the Iqamah for another time and he performed the Magrib Salaah, then Isha Salaah was performed after the Iqamah (for it) was called’. (Tirmizi, Nasai, Ahmad).

It is also narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) that he said, (While on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (SAS), we dismounted during the night and intended to take a rest. (Everyone fell asleep) and no one got up until the sun had risen (which means that Fajr Salaah on its time was missed). Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (SAS) said, ‘let every man take hold of his mount, for certainly this place has been visited by Satan’. Abu Hurairah (RA) said, ‘we did as we were ordered, and the Prophet (SAS) requested some water with which he made wudhu. He then made two Sajdahs and then had the Iqamah called, after which he performed the Fajr Salaah’. (Bukhari, Muslim).

These, as well as other traditions show that it was the permanent practice of the Prophet (SAS) to offer the Salaah as Qaza which was missed from its proper time. As mentioned in other traditions, he also gave a clear command to this effect when he said, ‘whoever sleeps over the Salaah or is unmindful of it, let him perform it when he remembers it. For certainly Allah Has said, ‘Establish Salaah for my remembrance’.

It is on account of such clear instructions that the four Imams of Fiqh and the other scholars have stated that offering Qaza Salaah is Wajib (essential) (Al Fiqh Al Islami wa Adilatihi vol.2 pg. 1148).

And Allah knows best,
