Question: Assalamu Alaikum,

i would like to find out when qurbani is compulsory on a person?

I have been getting many mixed and confusing opinion on the matter!
I have a savings of approximately 4 thousand dollars, i also have two loans amounting to 30 thousand dollars, i would like to find out if qurbani is compulsory on me?

Answer:

Wa alaikum As Salaam,

Qurbani becomes compulsory upon a person when he has the Nisaab of Zakaat during the 3 days of Qurbani.

If you have a savings of approximately $4,000.00 and you have two loans amounting to $30,000.00, then at the time of Qurbani subtract the amount that is due upon you at that time (to pay towards the loan) from your $4,000. If the remaining amount is the same amount as the Nisaab of Zakaat or more, then you must do the Qurbani.

Do not look at the total figure of debts to be $30,000.00 at that time, since this is not the amount that is due from you per month. Only the monthly installment should be taken into account.
