Saying ‘Pray in your homes’ in Adhaan.’ Is this permissible?
As Salaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaah Wa Barakaatuh, respected Mufti Saheb,
I have a question with which I need some clarity on. I was told by a Muslim that there is a hadeeth which more or less states that. When rain falls or there is thunder, the Muazzin would add in the adhaan, “pray in your homes”. If there is a hadeeth to this effect? And if there is, is it permissible to practice upon such a hadeeth? jazaakal laahu khairaa.
Wa Alaikum Assalaam,
الجواب و بالله التوفيق
There is a narration in which it is recorded that such an action was done by the Mu’azzin and it was stated by the narrator Abdullah Ibn Abbas (R.A) that the Prophet (S.A.S) had instructed the Mu’azzin to do so. This however, was an isolated case/situation which was not taken and adopted to be an established act to be done continuously.
The reason that this announcement was made in the Adhaan at that time was to save/avoid the Muslims from coming out in the rain and walking on muddy tracks filled with slush, which would have caused great harms to them in going to the Masjid for Salah. Besides this narration/situation, there is no other case in which such is recorded. Hence, none of the scholars of Hadith or Fiqh have adopted this as an established general practice that should be done.
And Allah Knows Best.
