Weekly Surah Yaa Seen And Khatamul Quran In The Masjid

Question:

Assalamu Alaykum

What is the ruling pertaining to having weekly Yaseen Sharif Khatam in the Masjid for the purposes of Isale Thawab?

Answer:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

Reciting Quran for the purpose of Isale Thawab is permissible in Islam, however, this manner of having weekly gatherings and doing Khatam of Surah Yaseen Shareef is not in accordance to the practices of the Prophet(صلى الله عليه و سلم), the Sahabah or the Tabi’een. The Shariah has not given such guidelines, and the scholars have regarded such practices as Bid’ah and Makrooh. In this regard, the great jurists of Islam have written, ‘It was not a practice of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم), the Sahabah and the pious predecessors that they will gather for the sake of reciting Quran for the deceased. The only time they gathered on account of the deceased was to perform Janaza Salah. Hence, this practice is Bid’ah and Makrooh.’ (Sharh Safar As Sa’adat Pg. 273 by Shah Abdul Haqq Muhadith Dehlwi – Fatawa Raheemiya Vol. 6 pg. 182 Maktaba Raheemiya, Surat Gujurat).

Similarly, while speaking against such customary gatherings of reciting Quran for the deceased, the great hanafi Jurist, Allama Ibn Abideen Shami has narrated the statement contained in ‘Miraj Ad Dirayah’ which states, ‘All these practices are for show and name. One must therefore abstain from these, since there is no sincere intention for the sake of Allah.’ (Shami – Fatawa Raheemiya vol. 6 pg. 182.)

See Marghoob Al Fatawa vol. 1 pg. 337 (Ja’miatul Qirat, Surat Gujurat); Fatawa Haqaania vol. 2 pg. 46 (Jamia Darul Uloom Haqaniya Akora Khatak NawShera Pakistan).

And Allah Knows Best.
