COVERING THE AWRAH WHILE GOING TO BED

QUESTION:

As Salaamu Alaikum,

Is it okay to sleep half naked whether you are married or not? and also, is Red Fox cocoa butter halal?

ANSWER:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

Half naked means partially clothed, so it is not clear as to what areas of your body will be exposed. However, it should be understood that it is not essential (or required) for you to cover yourself entirely with clothing when you go to sleep. Seeing that you are normally in the private chamber of your bedroom where you may be alone or with your spouse, you can undress yourself to sleep, but must not be totally nude, since this is against the law of Hayaa (modesty) in Islam. At least, you should cover your awrah when you go to sleep. Even though one covers oneself while asleep, it usually happens that the cover moves away from the body while asleep and the awrah becomes exposed. One may think that one is all alone in the privacy of the bedroom and no one sees him if his awrah becomes visible, but while this may be so, it is important to know, that even when one is all alone in privacy, he is still required to cover the awrah.

Regarding this, it is narrated that the Prophet (S.A.S) was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what should we do about our Awrah (that is, what are the guidelines of the Shariah regarding revealing or concealing our Awrah (those parts of the body which must be covered)’. He (the Prophet) (S.A.W) said, ‘Guard your Awrah (cover your Awrah) except from your wives and those whom your right hand possesses’. He asked, ‘What about when a man is in front of another man?’ He (the Prophet) (S.A.W) said, ‘If you can avoid anyone from seeing it, then do that’. He asked, ‘What if one of us is alone? He (the Prophet) (S.A.W) said, ‘Allah is more deserving that you feel shy before Him’ (Tirmidhi, Hadith No 2769).

From this, the scholars have stated that the awrah must be covered at all times except when it is necessary to reveal it, like when one is taking a bath, using the washroom, having sexual relations etc.

Therefore, when going to sleep, you should cover you awrah. In the case of a man, his awrah is from the navel to the knees. So, this area should be covered when going to sleep. In the case of a woman, her awrah in front of her Mahram (blood relatives) is from her breast up to and including the knees. Therefore, when going to sleep, this area should be covered and the other areas of her body can be exposed. This is applicable to both married and unmarried persons.

Red Fox Cocoa butter is Halal.
