Question:

Assalamua’likum I have a question for you.  I wear hijab and I have problems with swollen lymph nodes on my neck. Wearing the hijab for long periods of time irritates the lymph glands on my neck causing them to swell. I tried the loose hijab for long periods, other than the wrapping one’s with the long neck cap. However I have gotten a swollen gland under the neck area where the hijab rest under the chin area.  What is the other alternative?

Answer:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

If you wish, you can try to use a large scarf that can cover the required areas properly without letting it touch the affected area of your neck. A large scarf is normally loose and does not have to be tied under the chin.

If however, this does not work, then you can consult a medical doctor and find out what might be safe to use in order to cover that area. Remember that this area is part of your awrah which cannot be exposed when you are in front of non-blood relatives. So, if wearing the Hijab causes a problem and irritates the lymph glands on the neck, then you should wear your hijab in such a manner where your head/hair, ears and other areas are covered, and use something else which is safe to cover the area where the lymph nodes on your neck are.

Whenever you are in private or with your family and blood relatives, you can allow this area to be exposed, so that it will not be irritated by the hijab.

And Allah Knows best
