Answer:

Bismillahi wa billahi at Tawfeeq

Participating in such rituals of the unbelievers, which are connected to their religion is impermissible. By impermissible, we mean that Muslims, must not involve themselves in those rituals, in any way at all. Impermissible does not mean in any way, that if a Muslim does that action, but it’s not kufr, then it is ok. As Muslims we believe, that Allah the most high, has the right to punish us for even the smallest sin. Participating in such rituals is a major sin. Therefore, this needs to be properly understood.

With regards to your question of whether this is kufr or not, it has been stated in Fatawa Mahmoodiya 19/568 that if one takes part in the rituals of the unbelievers, which are connected to their religious beliefs, and he does this to show respect and honour to that ritual then this is kufr. Otherwise it is a major sin.

If people are engaged in such activities in such large numbers, then rather than simply determining whether their actions amount to kufr or not, a strong effort needs to be made to educate the masses of the severity of involving in such evil practices.

How can a Muslim think, that involving in an act that is displeasing to Allah could ever be anything fun? The local scholars should be approached for guidance in educating the masses.

And Allah knows best.
