PAYMENT OF ZAKAAH

QUESTION:

 As Salaamu Alaikum.

Can you clarify an issue on zakaah please?

I have an account in the bank which I have set aside for emergency use and or for my kids. The sum does not change. I do not add or take out from this amt, Except for the interest which I remove.

I have been paying zakah on the total of all my assets including this account annually.

My QUESTIONS ARE:

  1. Do I continue to pay zakah on this account even though it has not changed since last paying zakaah or only on those that I use from (like that which my salary goes into) and those which i add to ?
  2. Is it paid on the addition amount only i.e the amount made or added since last zakaah or the total amount?

Looking forward to your response.

Jazak Allah khair

ANSWER:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

The answers to your questions are:-

  1. Yes, you must continue to pay Zakaah on this account once you own the Nisaab of Zakaah. Zakaah must be paid on wealth on a yearly basis even though the amount had not changed. Therefore, Zakaah would be paid from the account which you are using from, and also from the account which you are not using.
  2. Zakaah must be paid on the total amount, and not only on what has been added since you last paid Zakaah.

And Allah Knows best
