Protections from calamity in Islam

Question:

As Salamu alaikum mufti saheb what are the protections for calamity? is morning and evening Azkaar enough please explain about it and what precautions we can follow in Islam?

Answer:

The Azkaar and Duas which were taught and recited by the Prophet (S.A.S) in the morning and evening are very powerful and effective. They are comprehensive duas, which if read with sincerity, belief and reliance on Allah, will protect a person from all harms and calamities.

In addition, a person must always strive to be obedient to Allah and refrain from all sins and unlawful actions in all aspects of his/her life.

Disobedience to Allah brings about his wrath, and with this, His punishment comes to a person in the form of different calamities. Thus, when a person refrains from sins, transgression and Haram practices, he is actually protecting himself from calamities.

Also, when a person is obedient to Allah and he fulfills his duty to him, He (Allah) becomes pleased with the person, and protects him from every type of harm and evil, Therefore, besides reciting the daily Azkaar and duas, one should always try one’s best to be obedient to Allah in all matters, as far as possible. If any sin or wrong action occurred from the person, he should immediately turn in repentance to Allah and seek His forgiveness. In this way, the person will always be under Allah’s special care and protection.

As for Azkaar/duas which can be read, there are a number of them. Some of these are:-

  1. In an authentic hadith recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, it is narrated that the Prophet (S.A.S) said that whoever recites the following dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening, then nothing will be able to harm the person. The dua/Zikr is:-

(Bismillahillazi laa yadhuru Ma ismihi shai’un fil Ardhi Wa laa fis Samaa’i Wa huwas Samee’ul Aleem)

2.

لَا اِلهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّيْ كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِيْن

(Laa ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka inni kuntu minadh Dhalimeen)

Regarding this dua, the Prophet (S.A.S) is reported to have said, ‘No Muslim recites this dua about anything except that Allah will respond to him’. (Ahmad, Hakim).

3.

اللّهُمَّ لَا سَهْلَ اِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَه سَهْلًا وَ أَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزَنَ سَهْلًا

(Allahumma laa Sahla illa Ma Ja’altahu Sahla Wa anta Taj’alul Hazana Sahla)

(Sahih Ibn Hiban)
